OVERVIEW FO THE YEAR 1998

The string of successes of the Purebred Lusitano Horse throughout the year of 1998 has shown the same exuberance witnessed in previous years, both in terms of performance and breeding, with top rates of growth and technical betterment of this noble breed. As a matter of fact, in morphology and functional trails alike, the excellence of the Brazilian breeding-stock has become steadily evident, having even come out a winner in national competitions open to all breeds.

Despite all these resounding successes, the year of 1998 will be ever marked for two technological innovations introduced by the Gynaecologist Register Service of our Stud Book, which have given our Association technical supremacy in Brazil, for having being the pioneer in the use of DNA testing in order to verify paternity, and also for the electronic chips implanted in the horse’s necks as a further means of identification. However, these are absolutely not the only benefits brought by this improvement to our Stud Book.

As part of this ongoing process, an agreement has been reached with the Brazilian General Livestock Board, through its director Mr. João Costa Ferreira, and the Portuguese Purebred Lusitano Horse Breeder’s Association (APSL), by which that Coudelaria de Alter’s laboratories will be responsible not only for the Brazilian individual’s DNA testing, but also for keeping a comprehensive record of the Lusitano Breed’s DNA, that is to say, a worldwide record of the magnificent genetic heritage of this most regal of breed, a heritage unique to the Lusitano Horse.

Concerning market development, once again, we Brazilians are proud of the conduct of our stallions and mares, who have not only continued to fetch exceptional prices on local market, but in addition have kept up the same rate of expansion of exports, of which we would like to point out those to Mexico and the United States of America.

The continued establishment of the Brazilian breeding-stock as one of the most significant sources for other countries in America, is today an indubitable fact that exhorts us, the Brazilian people, to unveil the highly promising future envisaged for this sector.

As always, the XVII International Purebred Lusitano Horse Show was successfully held, meeting with rapturous applause. This annual event, which took place in November, attracted attention not only for the wondrous qualities of the contenders but also due to the presence of several eminent foreign visitors, substantiating the facts above mentioned.

We take this opportunity to express our gratitude to Dr. Luís Lupi for having taken on the taxing and complex task of judging this, the highlight of the Brazilian annual equestrian calendar of events, as well as to congratulate him on his superb and unblemished performance in this arduous mission.

The elections for the Board of Directors for the 1999/2000 term have been held, and the President elected was our great friend and time-honoured breeder, Antonio de Toledo Mendes Pereira Filho, who will certainly continue the magnificent work his father, the much-missed Toni Pereira, embarked upon with such fervour. In the same way, another of the Lusitano’s great breeders, José Garcia, was voted President of the Foundation. We congratulate Tonico and Cal and wish them the best of luck in tacking the trying tasks that loom ahead.

We conclude by, once again, expressing our sincere thanks to the authorities at the Ministry of Agriculture and Supply, and last but not least to Dr. Júlio Maria Puga, the departmental director of Supervision and Support for Animal Production for his invaluable help, particularly in renewing the aid consubstantiated in the Incentives Programme that made possible all the improvements and triumphs herein mentioned.

Once again I would like to congratulate the publishers of this Index of Purebred Lusitano Sires an Stud Farms, a work of outstanding quality and luxurious presentation, that is fast becoming established as one of the most important means through which our breed is becoming better known both, in Brazil and abroad.
